Wasted waste
Swedish waste management company IL Recycling has published the results of a survey on people's recycling habits. According to the study only 6 out of 10 are recycling by sorting their trash in the right bin.
However more interesting is that only 1 out of 10 thinks the trash then in fact is recycled. Meaning, 5 out of 10 are actually sorting their trash convinced it won't do any good!

Very interesting, I think. Would you say this is a Swedish phenoma or an example of great PR?
And does recycling really matter or not?
As long as nobody really knows, let's go with the flow and do what the lobby tells us. That seems to be the habit many Swedes have adopted.

When no facts are on the table but interest groups are screaming and shouting - who has the guts to be politically incorrect?

In fact I don't think it's a Swedish phenomena. At least in the UK we see similar patterns. However I wouldn't bet on the same thing for the Southern European countries.
Yes, recycling matters. It's an important raw material source (especially metal) and it makes combustion more effective and clean. But the potential is even greater, especially for renewable fuels.
Norberg (DN article in Swedish) is just right. It's fascinating and scary. If you want to dig into the subject even more, I would recommend Björn Lombergs "The spectical environmentalist" which pointed out the same thing years ago and was heavily debated and critizesed just because of the fact that he showed proofs of that the world actually becomes a better place to live in. However still not perfect and there is still much to do.
